On July 25, 2012 the Upper Cook Inlet Commercial Fisheries staff estimated the total Kenai River sockeye salmon run through July 23 to be 3.3 million fish. The final run to the Kenai River is expected to exceed 4.6 million fish.

The entire UCI sockeye salmon run to date was estimated to be 4.7 million fish through July 23, with a final run to UCI expected to exceed 6.7 million fish.

With this inseason assessment, commercial fisheries management now falls under the guidelines for run sizes greater than 4.6 million Kenai River sockeye salmon. Changes in management include an increase in the Kenai River sockeye salmon inriver goal from a range of 1.0 million to 1.2 million fish to 1.1 million to 1.35 million fish. In addition, drift gillnetters will have no mandatory restrictions on their regular Monday and Thursday fishing periods.
